Producer Chris Horvath met David on a session in the summer of 1997. "Somebody recommended Dave to sing on a song demo I was doing. He shows up and starts singing and the engineer and I look at each other with eyebrows raised and said 'Where the hell have YOU been?'. He just slayed me. We really hit it off and I think it was a couple of days later I wrote the verse of a tune with his voice in mind. He came over so we could finish it and within 20 minutes he had an idea for the chorus and that was our first tune which was "Waterfall". Chris spent the rest of the summer floating around David's pool working on a tan, enjoying icy cold tropical drinks, and helping write songs for what would eventually become "Timebomb". He had been doing a lot of sessions, live dates, and arranging for Bobby Brown, Ray Charles, Toni Childs, Melissa Manchester, and loads of other stuff. Chris doesn't like to talk about life B.D. (before Dave) but if you want to find out more he can be reached by logging onto www.jamnation.com.
Talley Sherwood was there at the beginning and the end of "Timebomb". He's a great engineer and makes most anything sound good. In fact, many people have said that television sets sound better simply when he adjusts the volume. Talley has worked with Tina Turner, Lindsey Buckingham, Jude Cole, Guns'n'Roses, Peter Frampton, and many jazz artists like Mark Isham, Peter Erskine, and Bill Cunliffe. He brought all of his cool vintage gear to the Cactus Tree Motel to record and mix David's album. He did an amazing job. Chris' favorite bit of Talley trivia is that he cuts his own hair and hasn't been to a barber since the Reagan/Bush years.
Ian Mayo is hands down the best looking of all the Dave-ettes. In fact he's worked with Stevie Nicks & Alice Cooper. He was also in the LA band Hurricane Alice and met David while they were on the same bill for several shows. Ian co-wrote "Come Back Home" and plays some fine bass throughout the album. He plays in David's live band and in his spare time works with the LA industrial band The Kidney Thieves. David has pictures of Ian doing naughty things... they are included free of charge when you buy 100 copies of "Timebomb".
If you ever need a great guitar player who sings even better than Salvador Dali paints (what?) call Joey Cathcart. Joey was the lead guitar player in Nelson and has been singing in studios all over LA ever since he was a kid. He has also played on occasion with the group Venice, who are his uncles. He co-wrote "I'll Be Waiting Here For You" and played on a couple of others. The real fun is when David sits him down with a guitar and the two of them sing their favorite tunes from the last 20 years. Kind of like a human jukebox that takes beer instead of quarters.
Mark Harris played bass on several of the songs on "Timebomb". Mark has been very busy spreading himself way too thin for the past few years. For instance big name artists like Montell Jordan, David Crosby, Eddie Money, Ben Taylor, Dave Koz, Herbie Hancock, Charlie Sexton, Bijou Phillips, and Billy Idol all like Mark for his bottom (though we like him for his bass playing). He also plays regularly with Venice and Holly Long. As if that weren't enough he also runs marathons. Mark is also an accomplished miniature golfer, which he does mostly for the cardio.
Nick Vincent plays drums on much of David's album. He rocked. The fact that he COULD have played guitar and bass just as well only makes Chris Horvath want to hit him. Nick has played drums with Frank Black and even produced Frank's last 2 albums. He was the drummer on "Mmmm Bop" by Hanson and played with Brian Wilson, Carole King, Robert Palmer, Stevie Wonder, Tito & Tarantula, and John Fogherty. Nick likes his headphones really, really, loud while recording. So if you want to compliment him on his playing make sure you lean into his ear and speak up.
Many things have been written about Matt Laug. "Wonderfully percussive - a dazzling array of style, grace, and finesse" - NY Times,"A man small in stature but a GIANT behind the drums." - Irving Azoff. Now one or both of those statements may be false but this is true: you'd be hard pressed to find a harder rocking drummer that Matt Laug. Right now he's busy playing with Slash as the opening act for AC/DC on the North American Tour. He's also played with artists like Alanis Morrissette, New Radicals, King L, and Leah Andrionni. Trivia: for most of 1994 and 1995 Matt was the deputy Mayor of Manhattan Beach, California.
Lance Morrison may look like a demented serial killer but he's really a great guy. Pay no attention to the blankets covering his windows and his affliction for obscure literature. Lance has played bass on a load of great stuff. We won't bore you by dropping names like Alanis Morrissette, Rod Stewart, New Radicals, Donna Summer, yadda-yadda-yadda. You'll have to go talk to him directly. You can find him at any Don Henley gig up onstage just to Don's right. He also played on Don's latest album... just ask him, he'll tell you.
Twice while recording "Timebomb" Chris and David took their tapes and went on a field trip to Bruce Watson's studio in the Valley. Bruce is an awesome guitar player with a collection of vintage amps and axes that would bring most people to tears. Bruce has played with Rod Stewart, Dave Koz, and Elton John. Chris Horvath said "He always seems to come from a place musically I would never expect. His tracks on the album are like gold. It's a shame he was paid in copper".
The other folks who rounded out this merry band were:
Rob Jacobs recorded some of the basic tracks and mixed "Goodbye To You". He also recorded Don Henley and some band called the Eagles.
Mike Thompson who plays keys with Don Henley, but when he wants to get serious he plays with Adam Sandler.
Sergio Gonzales who has drummed with Jennifer Lopez, Take 6, Beth Hart, Brenda Russell, Toni Childs, and James Ingram.
John Flannery who has played guitar with Monster Magnet, Porno For Pryos, and the Toledo Show.
